Verifying GPIOs of MCU

Hallo

I am using microcontroller and I am very beginner in microcontroller programming. My question was if I set any of GPIO's from mirocontroller then , how can I verify is that GPIO pin set ?
I am using Microchip microcontroller and using MPLAB.
